Map Us West Coast States - The West Coast of the United States, also known as the Pacific Coast, Pacific States, and West Coast, is the coast where the western United States meets the North Pacific Ocean. This term usually refers to the busy US states of California, Oregon, and Washington, but sometimes includes Alaska and Hawaii, especially the U.S. Bureau of Csus as part of the territory of the United States.
With the exception of Alaska, Democrats have dominated West Coast politics in modern history, with states consistently voting Democratic in elections at all levels. Four out of five West Coast states have voted for a Democrat in presidential elections since 1992, and three of them have done so since 1988.

There are conflicting definitions of which states make up the U.S. West Coast, but the West Coast has always included California, Oregon, and Washington as part of that definition. For the most part, however, this term covers the three contiguous states and Alaska, as they are all in North America. For csus purposes, Hawaii is part of the West Coast like the other four states.

Encyclopedia Britannica refers to North America as part of the Pacific Coast, including Alaska and British Columbia. Although the encyclopedia acknowledges that Hawaii is part of the region to some extent, the editors write that it "has little in common geologically with the rest of the world."
Several dictionaries offer different definitions of the West coast. Lexico restricts the definition of West Coast to "the western coast of the United States, from Washington to California."
However, the Macmillan Dictionary gives a slightly different definition, "West coast of the United States, Pacific coast."
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the West Coast is the "Pacific Rim of the United States, including California."

The history of the West Coast begins with the arrival of the first known hominins in the Americas, the Paleo-Indians, who crossed the Bering Strait from Eurasia into North America via the Bering, land bridge between 45,000 and 12,000 BC Straits BC (47,000– 14,000 years ago). While the northern half of the West Coast, especially the coastal areas of Washington and Oregon, receives moderate rainfall, especially in the winter months, much of California's ocean is dry year-round. Temperatures near the coast are cooler compared to inland areas in the summer. In far Northern California, the temperature difference between Eureka and Willow Creek is 17°C (30°F), even though the two places are only 40 kilometers (40 km) apart, with Willow Creek at 500 meters (1,600). feet above sea level. Short trips inland and summer temperatures are comparable to those of the United States at the same latitude, sometimes warmed by prevailing winds from the hot deserts of Nevada and Arizona. Humidity is much lower on the West Coast compared to the East Coast, and thunderstorms are less frequent.

Politically, the West Coast often refers to states along the coast such as California, Oregon, and Washington because of their similar political systems. In 2017, Oregon writer David Sarathone described the West Coast as the "blue color" of shared values such as immigration, abortion, climate change and civil liberties.
According to a 2019 Pew Research Center survey, 75 percent of adults in the Pacific said "climate change is affecting the environment," more than any other region in the world.
These three states have voted independently in presidential elections since 1992, but Oregon and Washington also voted for a Democratic candidate in 1988.

None of these three states won their party's nomination from 2020, even though they voted with the Democrats.
Democrats control all but one marginal seat in the US House of Representatives after the 2018 elections.
In the 2010s, Democrats strengthened their political influence on the West Coast. After winning a special election in the state of Washington in 2017, the Democrats built state championships in three games in all three states on the West Coast.
After the 2018 US House of Representatives elections, Democrats controlled all West Coast states except for Washington's third district, which was held by Republicans.

Although Hawaii is rarely part of the West Coast by political definition, it has long been a stronghold of the Democratic Party. Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose are among the top 10 most populous cities in the United States and lead the West Coast in terms of population, each with more than 1 million people, with Los Angeles nearly three times the size of San Diego. After these three cities, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland have the fourth, fifth and sixth largest populations, respectively. Hawaii's capital and largest city, Honolulu, was the thirteenth largest city, and Alaska's largest city, Anchorage, ranked seventeenth on the west coast.

Since the West Coast immigrants and their descendants are more direct than the East Coast, their culture is smaller. Alaska is known for its outdoor activities, and its residents participate in a variety of activities unique to the state. Some of these events can happen through the state's annual events, such as the Iron Dog snowmobile races from Anchorage to Nome to Fairbanks.
